Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London), was raised by her mother, her grandmother as well as her godparents. Her father was absent from her family. In her early years, she battled an obsessive-compulsive disorder that caused anxiety due to the word association. Ford became interested in the profession of acting in her teen years, and was a part of the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. But after just a few weeks, she realized the school was not right for her. Ford was then able to apply for a place at the Central School of Speech and Drama and received an acceptance on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's classmates. He would go on to have frequent roles on the show as Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford was not able to graduate until 1993. However, in 1991, Ford had made her debut on television on the show Surgical Spirit. At that time, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate was featured in a variety of television programmes such as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning during the Nineties. Also, she was a regular performer in theatres, before eventually being a part of with the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate was first noticed because of her stand-up comedic performances in the year 1996.
